05.06.10 | Foundation Grant to Evergreen Kids Corner Cooperative Opens Doors for Low-Income Families to Quality Early Childhood Care
Hamilton - As Early Childhood continues to gain attention as a national issue, Evergreen Kids corner Cooperative continues a 30-year tradition of employing best practices in the field. Of particular note is their priority for fostering parental involvement in a child’s education – commonly recognized by national experts as the number one factor predicting academic and social success for children. The Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation recognizes the need for low-income and at-risk families to have access to early learning programs that provide this level of quality and interaction, making their partnership with Evergreen Kids Corner Cooperative a logical one.
As Evergreen states, “we believe that children learn by exploring concepts through hands-on activities, blocks of uninterrupted play and opportunities to explore both indoors and outdoors. Children learn best in caring, respectful relationships with peers and adults.” In Evergreen classrooms, parents serve as teaching assistants, affording them the opportunity to spend time in class with their child. More importantly, however, this level of parental involvement ensures that the mother or father learns tools for positive and meaningful interactions with their child. These skills come home with the parent, along with instructions for various home-based activities, thus magnifying the impact of the child’s educational experience.
With the help of this new grant, more families in need will gain access to Evergreen over the next two years. The Foundation is proud to partner with an organization dedicated to offering the best education to all young children and their parents, regardless of socio-economic background.
