07-30-09 | Missoula Area Youth benefit from Bitterroot Venture's free Sk8 Camp

The Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation works to improve lives through funding projects in the areas of eduction, health and human services, arts and culture, and community service. The Foundation recently provided a grant to Bitterroot Ecological Awareness Resource (BEAR), an organization which seeks to inspire youth to connect to their own potential, their community and the landscape through experiential and outdoor adventure programs.

Specifically, the Foundation’s grant went towards BEAR’s Bitterroot Venture program which provides outdoor activities to youth during the school year and summer months. Bitterroot Venture activities include hiking, extended back country travel, rafting, rock climbing, horsemanship, skiing and snowboarding, biking, ropes courses, Search and Rescue training, service projects, and more. Many participating youth are considered at-risk and are referred to BEAR by Youth Court.

As part of its Bitterroot Venture programming, BEAR recently hosted the “BEAR Sk8 Camp” at MOBASH Skatepark in Missoula, which will also travel to Dillon and Anaconda. The events are free of charge to participants.

In this Ravalli Republic Story, reporter Will Moss explains the event was not only "really cool," but an excellent, active learning experience for area youth.
