The Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation has awarded a $1 million grant to the Boys and Girls Club of the Flathead Reservation and Lake County toward the construction of a new clubhouse in Polson. This gift helps the Boys & Girls Club make significant strides towards funding phase 1, exceeding the $2 million mark with a projected phase 1 budget of $4 million.
“This gift demonstrates the visionary leadership of the Dennis & Phyllis Washington Foundation and especially Kevin Washington, empowering community organizations to create positive change at the local level,” said Judy Preston, Capital Campaign Committee Chairperson. “It will have a significant impact on the youth of the Flathead Reservation for generations.”
The partnership with the Foundation, in conjunction with Montana Rail Link and Modern Machinery, in this project insures the opportunity for club members to achieve academic success, healthy lifestyles, and character and leadership development, all of which are the foundational outcomes for all Boys & Girls Clubs.
The new Polson Clubhouse will give the Boys & Girls Club the ability to serve hundreds of kids a year, with the potential of serving 200 kids daily once it reaches full capacity. Currently, the Polson Clubhouse is only able to serve less than 50 kids daily, often reaching capacity as soon as the doors open each day.
The new club will be constructed on the corner of 2nd Street W. and 17th Avenue, adjacent to Polson Middle School and Polson High School. With a teen center, this location will seek to provide a positive place for older youth, as well as enhance programming and capacity for elementary students.
“Not only are kids in the club participating in positive activities, they are also provided a nutritious meal and snack each day. Without food in those tummies, learning is a challenge. It’s hard to learn to read when food is on your mind!” said Board Vice Chair Mick Holien. “For a nominal fee, $120 per year, these clubs provide a safe, friendly, and educational environment. The Boys & Girls Club accepts the challenge of being the difference in a child’s life.”
Mike Halligan, Executive Director of the Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation said, “The Foundation’s Board of Directors was impressed with the way the communities of Polson and Ronan and the Salish and Kootenai Tribe joined together to construct facilities that would benefit youth for generations to come and would also provide them with programs that would tap their creativity and inspire them to be the best they can be academically and as future leaders of our state and nation.”
